Automatic Passenger Counters
Automatic Passenger Counters allow agencies and operators to track ridership on transit vehicles. These devices count riders boarding and getting off the bus at each stop, and counts can be used for reporting and analysis.
Count data is downloaded in real time over the existing NextBus system data communications link. Managers and operators are able to get live passenger counts on buses as they are viewing live online maps. Passenger count/load data can also be pushed to riders so that they can see how full buses are before they arrive.
Reports include the date, time, vehicle ID, job/block ID, number of passengers who boarded, number of passengers who alighted, and the total passenger count at the moment the vehicle leaves the stop. This report can be used by managers to determine passenger load for the purpose of adjusting routes and times to prevent overloading of the vehicles. Operators indicate these reports are effective ways to manage costs and, in many cases, save money. Reports can be downloaded in .csv, .txt, or a printable screen format.
